Our Story in Brief

Conceived as a cornerstone of the University of the Witwatersrand’s Wits100 centenary strategy, the Wits Crucible Centre for Entrepreneurship was formally established and launched in 2025. It is housed at 47 Main Street in Johannesburg’s historic Marshalltown precinct — the Anglo American quarter, now at the heart of the city’s renewal under the Jozi My Jozi initiative.

The Wits Crucible is not a training programme. It is a venture creation and ecosystem orchestration platform — a place where Wits University’s research depth, the Wits Business School’s business expertise, and South Africa’s entrepreneurial ambition converge to build companies, create employment, and transform communities. In our first year of operation, we funded a full cohort, launched nine ventures into incubation, secured R15 million in programme funding, and activated institutional partnerships with Anglo American, the Anglo American Foundation, Services SETA, Liberty Group, and the Jozi My Jozi initiative. The Wits Crucible, through partnerships with Services SETA (Public); Anglo American PLC (Corporate); Anglo American Foundation (Social), SEDFA (Public); and the Wits Business School Executive Education and Wits Plus (Education), has mobilised more than R100 million by mid 2025 in seed funding allocated to renovating the 47 Main Building into a fit-for-purpose premier university-backed new venture creation vertical campus; design and launch the Entrepreneurship Capability Development Program; and launch a pre-seed to Series A seed funded start-up incubation program and a pathway to venture acceleration. We are now executing our scale phase.

Our Success Stories

Why Johannesburg? Why Now?

Johannesburg is Africa’s economic capital — and it is at an inflection point. The city’s CBD is undergoing a generational transformation through the Jozi My Jozi initiative, of which the Wits Crucible is a founding institutional anchor. Graduate unemployment stands at a historic high. The demand for technology-driven, market-relevant entrepreneurship has never been greater. And Wits University — ranked among Africa’s leading research institutions — has the depth, the networks, and the mandate to lead.

The Wits Crucible is not building survivalist entrepreneurs. We are building high-growth, technology-enabled ventures in Smart Retail, Water Technology, Circular Economy, Digital Platforms, Fintech, and Urban Infrastructure. This is Africa’s next innovation story — and it begins at 47 Main Street, Marshalltown, Johannesburg CBD.
