Programmes
Programme Overview
The Wits Crucible delivers a structured, end-to-end entrepreneurship development pipeline — from mindset development and capability training to venture incubation, an acceleration pathway, and investor readiness.
Our programmes serve unemployed graduates seeking to build technology-driven ventures, professionals transitioning into entrepreneurship, established early-stage entrepreneurs seeking structured support, and organisations seeking to develop entrepreneurial capability within their teams.
All programmes are anchored in the Wits University academic tradition — evidence-based, practically applied, and internationally benchmarked — whilst being deeply grounded in the South African entrepreneurial context and the specific challenges of the Johannesburg and Gauteng markets.
Entrepreneurial Capability Development Programme (ECDP)
Programme Overview
The ECDP is the Wits Crucible's flagship entry programme — a fully funded, 16-week intensive course for unemployed young graduates with technology-driven business ideas. It is co-delivered with the Wits Business School Executive Education division and external industry-expert partners, combining academic rigour with practical, market-relevant skills development.
The programme operates on a dual-delivery model. The first stream, delivered by WBS Executive Education, provides participants with a structured, applied academic grounding in entrepreneurship theory and practice. The second stream, delivered concurrently at the Crucible by external industry partners, provides applied skills in product development, market validation, financial modelling, and pitch preparation. The two streams are designed to reinforce each other over the 16 weeks.
Incubation Residency — New Venture Creation 1 (NVC1)
Programme Overview
The Wits Crucible 9-Month Incubation Residency Programme is the second stage of the venture creation pipeline. Running from April 2026 to January 2027, the programme admits graduates of the ECDP whose ventures demonstrated sufficient readiness at the Graduation Pitch Day. All nine ventures in the 2026 cohort are technology-based or meaningfully technology-enabled, and all founding teams are from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
The programme is a full-time, in-person residency at the Wits Crucible's Johannesburg campus. It is not a part-time programme. Founders are expected to commit fully to their ventures over the nine months, supported by a monthly founder stipend, dedicated co-working space, structured mentorship, and access to the Crucible's investor network, legal resources, and academic faculty.
Accelerator — New Venture Creation 2 (NVC2)
Programme Overview
The NVC2 Accelerator is designed for high-growth ventures that have demonstrated product-market fit and revenue traction during incubation. The programme focuses on venture growth, investment readiness, and preparation for institutional venture capital rounds.
NVC2 ventures receive specialist support in fundraising strategy, corporate governance, market expansion, and investor engagement. The accelerator pathway is available to Crucible incubation graduates and, by competitive application, to external high-growth ventures with demonstrated market traction.
Education, Training & Short Courses
Programme Overview
Beyond the ECDP pipeline, the Wits Crucible offers a range of short courses, masterclasses, and professional development programmes. These are delivered to aspiring entrepreneurs, professionals in transition, organisations seeking to build internal entrepreneurial capability, and participants in corporate ESO programmes.
Research & Scholarship
Programme Overview
The Wits Crucible's research agenda produces evidence-based knowledge that advances entrepreneurship theory and informs policy and practice across South Africa and the African continent. Research is conducted by faculty across the University of the Witwatersrand, in collaboration with international partners and directly informed by the practical needs of the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Digital Resources & NextLab
Programme Overview
The NextLab is the Wits Crucible's digital makerspace and innovation laboratory — a physical and digital environment for entrepreneurs to prototype, test, and iterate. Equipped with 3D printers, AR/VR equipment, and rapid prototyping tools, the NextLab is available to ECDP participants, incubation residents, and registered users by prior booking.
