The Crucible Catalyst is the Centre’s philanthropic and CSI funding architecture — a four-pillar framework that aligns global philanthropic trends, catalytic capital, and corporate social investment to sustain the Centre’s operations and advance its scale ambitions.

Development Funding
Support the ECDP and short-course programmes that provide fully funded entrepreneurship training for unemployed graduates and aspiring entrepreneurs. Funding in this pillar directly translates into programme participants, monthly learning stipends, and instructional resources.
Pillar 2
Teaching & Learning Infrastructure
Fund the development and maintenance of the Crucible’s physical and digital learning infrastructure — including the 47 Main Street campus renovation, NextLab equipment and maintenance, and the online learning portal.

Ecosystem
Development
Support the Crucible’s GECO convening role — funding ecosystem research, ESO capacity-building, policy advocacy, and the Crucible Conversations podcast and the Thought Leadership Series.

Incubation &
Acceleration Funding
Provide grants and catalytic capital for the NVC1 Incubation Residency and NVC2 Accelerator — directly funding venture creation, MVP development, founder stipends, and the SAFE-based investment pathway for high-potential founders.
Key Funding Innovations
Venture Impact Fund (VIF)
The Venture Impact Fund is the Crucible’s mechanism for recycling catalytic capital — ensuring that returns from successful venture investments are reinvested in the next generation of founders. The VIF operates as a revolving fund, compounding the impact of every rand invested over time.
Strategic Corporate Alliance Programme (SCAP)
The SCAP enables corporates and development finance institutions to form deep, multi-year partnerships with the Wits Crucible — co-designing programmes, co-funding ventures, and receiving dedicated access to the Crucible’s innovation pipeline, talent network, and research insights. SCAP membership also carries BBBEE recognition for qualifying Enterprise and Supplier Development investments.
