The Wits Crucible Knowledge Hub is the Centre’s open-access repository for research, analysis, and thought leadership. It brings together academic publications, policy briefs, practitioner guides, and multimedia content — all grounded in the Centre’s research agenda and freely accessible to entrepreneurs, policymakers, academics, and ecosystem practitioners.

The Centre’s research is organised into four thematic clusters, each producing outputs that directly inform the Crucible’s programmes, the GECO ecosystem platform, and South Africa’s national entrepreneurship policy landscape.
Responsible
Entrepreneurship
How do entrepreneurs create value responsibly — balancing commercial success with social impact, ethical governance, and environmental sustainability? The Crucible’s research on responsible entrepreneurship develops frameworks and case studies to help founders build businesses that are both profitable and positively impactful in their communities.
Sustainable Entrepreneurship Models for Africa
Which models of entrepreneurship are most effective in the African context — where market failures, infrastructure deficits, and informal economies create both challenges and opportunities? The Centre develops and tests models tailored to South African and broader African entrepreneurial environments, moving beyond Western venture capital frameworks that do not translate directly to the Johannesburg or Gauteng context.
Entrepreneurship and Business Development Services
How do BDS providers, incubators, accelerators, and government support programmes most effectively support entrepreneurial development? The Crucible’s research evaluates programme effectiveness, identifies best practices, and informs the design of more impactful entrepreneurship support interventions — drawing directly on the Centre’s programme data.
Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Reform & Development
What policy, institutional, and market reforms are needed to build a more coherent, effective, and inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystem in South Africa and in Gauteng? Crucible’s ecosystem research informs GECO’s policy advocacy and the Centre’s ecosystem convening work.
Publications & Research Outputs
The Crucible disseminates its research through a range of channels to maximise reach and impact, including peer-reviewed journal articles submitted to leading entrepreneurship, management, and development journals; working papers circulated for comment and feedback from the practitioner and policy communities; policy briefs — two to four pages that summarise research findings and offer actionable recommendations for government and ESOs; case studies documenting venture journeys, programme innovations, and ecosystem developments; and an Annual Ecosystem Report on the state of Gauteng’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Thought Leadership Series
The Crucible Thought Leadership Series features regular public lectures, panel discussions, and webinars with leading academics, entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers. Events are held at the Wits Crucible campus and streamed live, with recordings archived in the Knowledge Hub. Topics include technology-driven entrepreneurship and the future of African innovation; responsible AI for South African start-ups; fintech regulation and the start-up ecosystem; scaling ventures from Johannesburg to the continent; corporate–start-up collaboration and ESO programme effectiveness; and policy reform for inclusive entrepreneurship.

Podcast
Crucible Conversations is the Wits Crucible’s flagship podcast series, recorded in the Centre’s podcast studio at 47 Main Street and available on all major streaming platforms. Each episode features a conversation between the Director, a faculty member, or a programme graduate and a leading figure in entrepreneurship, investment, or policy. Topics include responsible AI, clean technology entrepreneurship, African e-commerce, fintech regulation, impact investing, and the lived experience of building companies in South Africa.
